Nov 10 - 19, 2014 Annual Christmas Box Drive Thank you for supporting the annual Magrath Lions Christmas Box Drive! In Magrath we are collecting your donations from Nov 10 - 19, 2014. There will be Christmas Box collection areas for Magrath School classrooms if you wish to donate items there for the drive. You may choose as well/instead to drop off your own filled boxes and donations for shipping ($7 per box suggested) to the Lions c/o Magrath Pharmacy M-F 9-6pm - but remember the cut-off for our Magrath Drive is Wed Nov 19 6pm at the Pharmacy! Welcome to our new 2014/15 Lionistic Year
Thank you to all who helped make our No Cost Clothing event (Aug 29/30) so successful this year! It was a great way to start us out in service to the community. The costs to run this event were minimal - a 100ft clothesline rope and 24 xl hd clear plastic bags for the cleanup afterwards. We happened to find $50 donation at back of collection van which was used as a deposit on the town sign and later to cover those expenses. Yay. Herb McKelvey also donated $5 toward the lions club for this project to me at my work. Yay Magrath! We can report that the Magrath Lions Community No Cost Clothing event concluded today (Fri 29/Sat 30 Aug 2014) and seemed to go extremely well, despite the numbers away this last long weekend. Many volunteers took time to help us man the sorting desk and run the event. You donated an amazing amount of clothing (250+ large bags of clothes were donated in during the collection week and sorted out on Fri with only 21 xlarge bags remaining on Sat to be picked up by Diabetes Society on Wed). Over 210 large bags of clothes were acquired by 100's of patrons. Many dedicated workers were involved with over 200 man hours recorded to run the event plus those who helped but declined to sign in and out. Thank you Lions and volunteers! The event closed at 2pm Sat and we were able to pack up everything quite quickly and put the tables all back in place by 3:30pm and locked up by 4pm. Yay again. Thank you to everyone for supporting the No Cost Clothing event this year. Many dedicated volunteers (too great to be numbered ..), tons of clothes (and shoes, for some reason) donated and sorted out, and lots of patrons out on Saturday .. * 250+ large bags of clothes donated during collection week this year * only 21 (xl) bags left over (to Diabetes Society on Wed) * We estimate 210 large bags of clothes (about 5000 lbs) distributed. * 200 man hours recorded to run the event (50 workers avg 4 hrs each) And finally, more thank you's: to all the local churches who so willing support us and participate, to the Town of Magrath for letting us use the Ice Arena, for the many returning long working seasoned volunteers, to all you who so willingly donated your gently used clothing. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Town of Magrath/Lions Club No Cost Clothing Event (note change of date) at Ice Arena will be held Fri/Sat 29/30 Aug 2014 .. Thanks to those who were able to attend our final event for the year! We were able to piggyback with the town cleanup event and made fairly quick work of the cleanup along the trail. We put the club wheelbarrow to good use and moved half dozen loads of dead branches and picked thistles along the upper trail. We were also happy to support the BBQ afterward, with many hamburgers and hotdogs purchased for that $60 donation. Thankfully the threatening rain held off until after the work and eating was all done.
Afterward, we continued the festivities inside the camp kitchen while it rained for a short time, and sang happy birthday to Adrien 16 and Preston 1 and then had cake and icecream and visited for a while. All the younger children then helped Lion Roger test out the Terry Trainer Memorial (Pirate Ship) playground. We will hold our new Lionistic year meeting in Sep 2014. See you all then! Our year end picnic has been rescheduled to Tue 24 Jun 2014 .. in conjunction with the 3rd Annual Magrath Trails Cleanup & Family Picnic at the Park. The fun starts at 6pm at the Magrath Fishpond park .. to work a bit on the trail and/or playground and then the picnic is afterward .. Please wear your Lions Shirts and bring whatever cleanup tools you have about. We hope the water has receded a bit by then!
See you all there! Letter of Support 31 May 2014 Magrath Lions Club Box 152 Magrath, AB T0K 1J0 magrathlions.com To whom it may concern. Dear Sirs/Madams, The Magrath Lions Club has a long history of service in and around Magrath. We support the Greenhouse Project initiative proposed by The Horticultural Division of the Magrath and District Agricultural Society. The Magrath Lions Club was founded in Magrath, Alberta with 22 charter members in 1938 with Gladstone Balderson as our first Lions Club President. Many of those charter members were farmers and ranchers [it was a gravel road to Lethbridge back then]. Today we carry on with about a dozen active members and continued community volunteer support of our projects. We celebrated our 75th Charter Night in May 2013 and our most recent project was the construction of the Terry Trainer Memorial playground at the local fish pond/campground. The Magrath Lions Club is a proud member of Lions District 37N. Today we rely more on social media and online websites to facilitate our work in the community. Like us at facebook.com/magrathlions or follow our club activities at magrathlions.com One of our own initiatives is the sponsoring of a Leos youth club at the Magrath School and would encourage them along with our own Lions Club members to assist in this project. Support of this facility could be an area of focus for the Leos (high school aged youth) here in Magrath, in participating in both the educational aspect as well as helping in the maintenance and operations of such a facility. We believe there is much educational merit in learning to grow food for consumption as well as in conserving local plant species and in increasing awareness of our community history and culture. We currently head an annual community food drive each year to support the Lethbridge area food banks. We would support the growing of fresh produce for donation to a cause like this. Thank you.
